Here is a great article on how phone calls lead to ID theft.  As the author pointed out, the phone calls often simulate real calls from your bank, and this is how some people get seduced.  My person response is not answering the phone at all if I don't know who the person is.  Also, you can check your bank accounts on-line periodically to look for suspicious activity.
